Dental Examination - A Comprehensive Dental Checkup
A new patient dental examination, or a regular dental check-up, is one of the most important parts of the dental process. Consequently, it is more than just counting your teeth! Our dentists take a holistic approach to check-ups, looking at the health, function and appearance of your mouth to ensure that your smile stays as bright and healthy as possible.

What happens during a dental examination?
A dental examination is used to gather information about you, and about what treatments you need or want. Your private dentist will spend time with you to examine all aspects of your dental health.
- During the dental examination, the dentist will ask you about your general health, your habits and your dental health. As a result, this allows the dentist to form a risk profile and identify any diseases that pose a risk to you.
- An extra-oral examination will look for any lumps, bumps or abnormalities in your head neck, and jaws. Then an inspection of the tissues within your mouth will begin. The dentist will look for oral cancer or any sign that anything could progress to this condition.
- An assessment of the health of your teeth and gums will highlight any problems. Finally, any special investigations (e.g. x-rays) will be carried out and reported upon.
- Following the inspection, your dentist will report his or her findings, and a discussion will be held to determine if any treatment is needed.
It's very important to make sure you mention anything of relevance to the dentist during this examination. Unhappy with the size, shape or colour of your teeth? Now's the time to tell your dentist. Want to have your teeth straightened? Mention this, and your dentist will give you all the options.
If you need treatment
The dentist will be looking at three key factors in your mouth,
- Health
- Function
- Aesthetics
These three considerations shape the treatment recommendations made to you.
Your dentist will discuss all the options for treatment available to you. You will always be in control of your treatment and will play an active role in constructing your treatment plan.
