Dental veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment which can help mask many cosmetic dental issues. Not just a treatment for celebrities, many patients have dental veneers fitted.
Dental veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. Constructed from very thin shells of porcelain, they fit over the front surface of a tooth and are similar to false nails! Applied to the teeth with a dental cement they are very strong and aesthetic. We choose a precise shade of porcelain to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten your front teeth.
They can correct or disguise conditions such as:
- Chipped teeth
- Discoured teeth that do not respond to tooth whitening
- Poor position of teeth where orthodontics is not possible
- Correction of tooth rotation where orthodontics is not an option
- Correction of spaces between teeth
- Improvement in the length of worn down teeth
As long as the patient is suitable for the treatment, dentists use dental veneers in smile enhancement treatments and smile makeovers. The restorations are often provided in conjunction with tooth whitening treatments and dental braces in order to achieve the best results.
How do we provide dental veneers?
At the Rock House Dental Practice, we use advanced techniques to provide our patients with dental veneer restorations. We plan each case in detail and make sure that the amount of tooth structure removed is absolutely minimal. Firstly, photographs are taken, to aid the designing of the veneer(s). Secondly, a wax-mock up is created so that the patient can visualise the end result. We use master dental ceramic technicians to construct the most beautiful and long-lasting porcelain restorations possible, thereby giving you the result you deserve. You can read more about the techniques that we use on the smile makeover page.
As with any dental treatment, it is important that you are in good dental health. If you are suffering from gum disease, or have loose teeth, these treatments are not for you. You must ensure that your oral hygiene is excellent as otherwise, you will find that these treatments will begin to fail quickly. If you grind your teeth or have a clenching habit, then these treatments are not ideal as you will cause the restorations to chip and crack.
What is a dental veneer made from?
Porcelain is the most common material choice, but in some cases, we use composite instead. Porcelain is a stronger material, whereas, composite is the same material found in white fillings.
Advantages of porcelain veneers
In the right situation, they have many advantages. Their construction is extremely thin in cross-section, therefore, minimising the destruction of the teeth. In fact, in some cases, we can fit veneers to the teeth without having to damage the tooth surface at all. They look very attractive and natural, and as a result, nobody else should know that you have dental veneers.
Disadvantages of porcelain veneers
In most cases, dental veneers are not completely reversible. Usually, the provision of dental veneer(s) requires some preparation (although minimal) of the teeth. Veneers, like any other dental restoration, require maintenance. No dental treatment is permanent, and dental veneers are no different - they will require replacement at some point. If you decide to have tooth whitening after you have had your teeth veneered, remember, they will not whiten.
How many veneers do you need?
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. One veneer or a full set, the number of veneers required depends on how many teeth require treatment. One veneer fits on one tooth.
How much do dental veneers cost?
Please see our fees page for information of the cost of dental veneers.
Choosing the right dentist
Cosmetic dental restorations require different processes to normal dental treatment. It is important that you choose the correct dentist to provide you with treatment as this is complex treatment. Do your research, ask friends for recommendations so you can satisfy yourself you are with the right dental practice. Ask your dentist for before and after photographs. Ask them how many times they have carried out these procedures and what guarantees are provided. Check their qualifications. At the Rock House Dental practice our dentist's train in the provision of cosmetic dental treatments.
