Types of dental emergency
Toothache
Toothache or tooth pain can be extremely uncomfortable. If it progresses to a dental access it can become something entirely more serious. Toothache results from dental decay, dental sensitivity or even gum disease. In short, anything that upsets the nerve within the tooth will lead to toothache.
The dentist can treat toothache by placing a temporary filling, or by removing the nerve of the tooth. A dental extraction occurs if the tooth is not restorable.
Fractured tooth
A fractured tooth leads to toothache upon exposure of the nerve or dentine layer. If the fractured edge is sharp, it will cut your cheek or tongue. Also, a fractured tooth at the front of the mouth looks unsightly.
Smoothing the rough edge of the tooth is a great short term measure. Otherwise, the tooth may need a temporary filling, removal of the nerve, or even an extraction.
Gum infection
A gum infection is often very painful. As a consequence, you may experience a swollen face. It occurs due to bacteria in the mouth infecting the gum tissues.
Treatment is by draining the infected site usually by deep cleaning. Antibiotics are often prescribed if there is a facial swelling.
Wisdom tooth infection
A wisdom tooth infection occurs as the gum surrounding wisdom teeth becomes infecting. Therefore, this leads to pain and swelling.

Dental Abscess
A particularly nasty type of dental emergency. An untreated dental infection leads to a dental abscess. As a result, this may also lead to a facial swelling. If you suffer a dental abscess in Wolverhampton or the surrounding areas, contact us so that we can help.
Treatment involves draining the infected site or extraction of the tooth. Often, antibiotics are prescribed to treat a facial swelling.
Orthodontic dental emergency
If you have dental braces, you may break an orthodontic bracket or an orthodontic wire. We can help you by rectifying this situation. You may need the wire cut or replaced. The bracket can be re-fixed or a new one placed.
Denture dental emergency
Dentures rubbing? We can easily adjust the denture to make it comfortable for you to wear. If you break your denture, we will try and repair on-site, otherwise, we will send to our laboratory for a repair. This is often done in one or two days.
Lost crown or lost bridge
A lost crown or bridge can be uncomfortable. It can be particularly embarrassing if its at the front of your mouth. If exposed, the tooth is at risk of bacterial ingress which may lead to toothache.
Bring the crown or bridge to us, we will try to re-cement it. If you don’t have it, then we will try and make you a crown or bridge on that day.
Implant dental emergency
Dental implant emergencies are complex. Therefore, a dentist with experience of dental implant emergencies should carry out the treatment. It may be something as simple as a screw becoming loose. This is often easily rectified. It maybe something more complex. We are fully trained to ensure we are able to deal with dental implant emergencies.

Today I went for a review of a root canal done last year by Dr Kristlee Fernandes. When it was done I couldn’t believe how painless the whole procedure had been. Kris put me at ease and was very gentle. All went well at today’s review so I know he did an excellent job. The practice is now at its new location (273 Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton), which is beautifully appointed, spacious, warm and welcoming. All the staff are so friendly and helpful.

Had to have an emergency appointment, followed up with an extraction. They were really accommodating and sympathetic, I got treatment really promptly. Even the procedure was ok because they paid great attention to pain relief .

- Having broken my crown on Thursday, 19th December 2025 in the morning , I visited the practice hoping that they could help me, especially near Christmas time! The lady at the reception was most helpful saying that I would be able to see someone within 40 minutes, considering that they had appointments during the day. Aran who saw me was very professional in every way, explaining to me what the cause could be. Having a temporary crown fitted on the same day felt like an early Christmas present.
